Why We Exist
In the middle of the 20th century, when the idea of joint replacement was, well, just an idea, the founder of BioPro, Dr Charles Townley, believed that his patients should be able to lead pain-free lives. As a young physician in his residency, he began sketching implants for various body parts and designing the various tools and implements he would eventually need to perform joint replacement surgeries.
Key to his earliest implant designs — some of which are still used today — was creating an implant that replicated the human body as closely as possible. It really wasn’t rocket science…it was just good anatomical science.
Though joint replacement has come a long way in the past 60-plus years, BioPro still believes strongly in the idea that drove its founder to design implants: the key to joint reconstruction is restoration of anatomy. Dr Townley called this “Design by Reason.”
Today, based on that principle, BioPro continues to develop new products and technologies that complement patient anatomy, are simple to implant and are reproducible from patient to patient. BioPro products are always produced with the patient in mind.
What We Do
BioPro not only designs and manufactures joint replacement implants, but the company also conducts its own primary research on site at its corporate office and research laboratory in Port Huron, Michigan. BioPro partners with orthopedic and podiatric surgeons from around the world to update existing products and to develop new designs.
Additionally, BioPro offers on-site hands-on and classroom education on surgical techniques and the use of its products.
BioPro also designs and manufactures the surgical instruments utilized by physicians for joint replacements and surgical procedures.
Interestingly, Dr. Townley did not initially seek to patent his implant designs; to him, they were tools he developed to help patients live productive, pain-free lives. However, with the advances in the medical field, he eventually began patenting his work. He received his final two patents — for the Modular Basal Thumb Implant and the Basal Thumb Implant — posthumously. BioPro currently holds 10 patents for its devices.
BioPro is proud of the fact that more than 90 percent of the manufacturing of its instruments and implants is done on-site at the corporate office in Michigan. Most other parts that are not manufactured in our facility are purchased from U.S.-based manufacturers and are produced in the U.S.
In addition to manufacturing our own products, we provide manufacturing and distribution services for the orthopedic community.
Experience Matters
Incorporated in 1987, BioPro has been in existence for more than 30 years, making it one of the most experienced manufacturers in our market segment in the U.S.
While other companies around the world introduce products based on the latest trends in the industry, BioPro remains true to Dr. Townley’s “Design by Reason” principle, that the first and foremost objective at all times is to replicate the human anatomy as closely as possible.
