Improves strength and dexterity

The BioPro Modular Thumb Implant is engineered with a 15 degree ulnar angle and offset head, which mimics the natural alignment of the carpometacarpal joint. This not only prevents dislocation, but provides a stable construct for metacarpal leverage.

Maintains Thumb Height

Follow-up at an average of 6-years shows the BioPro Modular Thumb Implant preserved metacarpal length and cosmetics in all patients, with less than a 1% subsidence rate.1 This is achieved by minimal burring of the trapezium, only creating a shallow socket covering roughly 1/3 of the implant head. Additionally, by offering multiple head heights (0, +2mm and +4mm), the surgeon can achieve proper joint tension and alignment intraoperatively.

Faster Recovery

The recommended post-op protocol includes casting for 2-4 weeks, followed by 4 weeks of strengthening exercises with full recovery by 12 weeks. While many patients are virtually pain-free in a matter of weeks, clinical experience has shown that some patients may have discomfort for up to a year while the trapezium remodels. After remodeling, this discomfort should resolve.

How it works

Resection

A precision cutting guide is engineered to remove 5-6mm of bone from the base of the metacarpal, parallel to the articular surface.

Burr

Coarse and fine 12-15mm hemispherical burrs are utilized to create a shallow socket in the trapezium.

Broach

Compression broaches matching the implant stem are inserted into the metacarpal to ensure a tight medullary interference fit.

Implant

After trialing, the final two piece implant is assembled and press-fit into the joint. Rapid mobilization is possible with average full recovery in 8-12 weeks.

Material

The standard implant is manufactured from cobalt chrome, a highly biocompatible and durable material. A titanium version is available for use in patients susceptible to nickel chromium allergies.

Coating

The stem is coated with titanium plasma spray to improve biological fixation.

Head Diameters

Head diameters include 12mm, 13mm, 14mm, 15mm to ensure proper trapezium coverage.

Head offsets

0mm, +2mm, +4mm allow for proper joint tensioning.

Stems

Four standard stem sizes and four revision stem sizes are available to ensure proper metacarpal fit.
